How do you make money that is not dependent on labour when labour is itself the constraint?

04 — The Method

A trading idea is not an engineered trading system.

The method grew out of the original objective: create a process capable of producing and preserving financial surplus without requiring a fresh hour of manual labour for every action. The engineering expanded as we discovered what that objective actually demanded.

The research layer — make the question testable

A strategy needs an explicit rationale, defined rules, a defensible test and a way to distinguish genuine information from choices that merely fit the past. We examine what assumptions each piece of research relies on and where the result could fail.

The data layer — decide what the numbers mean

Historical futures observations must be tied to exact contracts and a declared construction process. Rolls, continuous histories and source differences are consequential engineering decisions, not clerical details.

Data lineage and transparent transformations allow results to be traced back to what was actually observed.

The portfolio layer — understand combined risk

A promising strategy is only one component. We study allocation, diversification, concentration and drawdowns at the whole-system level. Risk management is inseparable from the problem of staying invested long enough for any plausible edge to matter.

The implementation layer — design for the real world

The system must have explicit responsibilities, reliable interfaces, automation where it reduces repeated work, and ways to detect missing data or unexpected behaviour. A programme that produces a plausible number while silently using wrong inputs is not reliable engineering.

The operating layer — can the owner actually run it?

Maintenance, failures, monitoring and the psychological and financial consequences of losing periods all affect whether a process meets its purpose. Automation is useful only when its supervision costs and fragility do not consume the benefits it was built to create.

How we reached this design

There were false starts, unnecessary layers and changes of direction. We now teach the engineering through the questions that made those layers necessary, using the decisive failures as case studies rather than asking students to retrace every chronological detour.

For more detail, the earlier Our Approach remains available as an engineering note. A separate engineering services description is retained from the previous site; it is not part of the five-page educational sequence.
